Beats on Screen: A Celebration of Hip-Hop Cinema

With hip-hop's expansion from the Bronx to the rest of the world, it was an inevitable next step for its influence to touch film, even creating its own genre. Some would even say hip-hop in movies helped it to spread nationally throughout the United States and globally. Whether it was films showcasing emcees, b-boys and b-girls, graffiti writers, like in Wild Style, or rappers producing their own movies – one can’t deny hip-hop’s influence on the medium.

This summer, the Houston Museum of African-American Culture (HMAAC) and Emancipation Park Conservancy (EPC) are celebrating the 50th anniversary of hip-hop with an outdoor film series featuring classic films significant to the culture. Each film will be preceded by musical sets led by well-known Houston DJs.
